Tiit Nilson
Born on 16.11.1939, Suure-Jaani, Estonia.
In 1963 graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Tartu University.
Candidate of physics and mathematics (PhD), Tartu University, 1968. Thesis: "Mathematical modelling of radiative transfer in vegetation".
Doctor of science (DSc) in
geophysics, Tartu University, 1991, thesis "Radiative transfer in
non-homogenous plant canopies".
Since 1963 T. Nilson has been working at the Institute of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics, Estonian Academy of Sciences (since 1995 - Tartu Observatory), presently holding the post of senior research associate.
In 1992-1997 professor of bio-geophysics, Institute of Environmental Physics, Tartu University. From 1999 a visiting professor at Tartu University. Present lecture courses: Remote sensing of vegetation (students of environmental physics), remote sensing of environment (students of environmental technology), remote sensing of forests (forestry students, Estonian University of Life Sciences).
Main scientific interests: environmental physics, optical remote sensing of vegetation, radiative transfer, heat and mass transfer in plant canopies, ecology and productivity of vegetation, global change.
