Photometry of stellar and non-stellar objects in the framework of GAIA
GAIA-PWG: Progress meeting

3-5 July 2002
Tartu, Estonia

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

The goal of the GAIA Photometry Working Group (PWG) is the design of the photometric system (PS) to reach the scientific goals of the mission. The PS should be fixed by mid 2005 to concur with the present schedule for GAIA development. We expect to be close to the final system by mid 2003 and that the remaining time up to mid 2005 can be used for final adjustments and verifications.

The present meeting is the third of the PWG devoted to the PS design and it is open to all the scientific community interested in GAIA and its astrophysical implications. The aim of the conference is twofold: 1) to assess the scientific return of the PS design, and 2) to assess the technical aspects of the PS implementation.

The new design of GAIA will be discussed.

Plenty of time for discussions among the participants will be allocated. Those discussions will also serve for the definition of new tasks, if necessary, identification of new contributors, schedule for the next months, etc.

Thus, the main topics are:

We are pleased to invite you to participate actively in the meeting. Your suggestions and recommendations for other topics will be welcomed.

Preliminary outline of the meeting:

  • - the meeting will have three morning sessions and two afternoon sessions,
  • - the official programme will be finished with the July 5th morning session,
  • - each session includes one coffee break,
  • - approximately equal time will be devoted for both scientific and technical aspects,
  • - up to 20 minutes plus time for discussions will be allocated for a presentation,
  • - if the number of presentations should "overflow", some speakers will be asked to bring a poster instead of oral presentation. Location:
The meeting will be held in Tartu, Estonia ( http://www.turismiweb.ee will help you in several aspects). The university town Tartu can be reached by bus from Tallinn (the capital of Estonia). Tallinn has direct flight connections with several European towns (Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen etc.) and also ferry connections with Helsinki and Stockholm. In the daytime, the coach (Tallinn-Tartu) departure interval is 15-30 minutes only and the trip lasts ~ 2 hours 30 minutes (180 km). The distance between the airport and bus terminal is ~ 2 km, we recommend to take a taxi. Money can be exchanged both in the airport and in the bus terminal. It is possible to rent a car from Tallinn airport.

In Tartu, the bus terminal is close to the town centre as most of the hotels do. The conference room is located in the "Toome Conference Building" (Lossi 19) in the green area of Tartu town centre. Please, consult our web pages for the scheme of the room and photo of the conference building. The necessary equipment (viewgraph and computer projectors etc.) will be available in the meeting room. The conference room and hotels are marked by the red circles and are numbered on the town centre map as:

    1. - Toome Conference Building
    2. - Hotel London
    3. - Hotel Park
    4. - Hotel Oru Villa

    Accommodation:
There is a quite wide offer of hotels in Tartu. Please, consult http://turism.tartumaa.ee . You will find prices around 65 Euros (~ 1000 EEK ) for single and up to 100 Euros for double/twin rooms. Hotels and hostels with considerably cheaper costs are there in the list, too. However, the LOC has booked a number of rooms for the period 02.07.02 - 06.07.02 in the hotels with different price levels (e.g. Draakon, Oru Villa, hostel Rändur). If you need the assistance at the hotel booking, please, indicate it in the registration form attached to this announcement.

    Local arrangements:
The LOC has planned a welcome party in the evening of 02.07 at the conference room. During the meeting days the participants can have a lunch at several cafes and restaurants located nearby (5-10 minutes of walk). On Friday (05.07) afternoon an excursion by bus will be organized for participants (and accompanying persons) to visit Tartu Observatory (~20 km from town) and a nice place in the southern part of Estonia where the closing dinner will be served. The payment for the excursion and dinner will be organized at the registration after the arrival to Tartu.
